It’s exactly what it sounds like - build up your DD. But there’s a catch. You have to be willing to do all of the work by yourself. Here’s what I would ideally want to do to my GMT400.
LM7 swap, injectors, FMIC, eBay 76 trim, full exhaust, parking light duct, HD rear, post-02 4L60E with Corvette Servos, 3/4 drop, DRs, custom Diamond steelies with some insane offset, electric fans, big rad, flares, and an MSII.
And go!

If someone made aftermarket magnetic ride, I would put it on my E34. I also need some Euro Smiley headlights (they’re way better than USDM).
At some point in the future, I’m gonna put an exhaust dump before the first muffler, for sweet, unmuffled, tiny V8 sounds.

see thats no fair, cuz my first move would be just to get the damn thing to stop leaking oil and that process is above me (special tools, time setting)
so i guess i’ll plasti-dip the plastic, k&n intake, cat-back exhaust, and maybe a downpipe. If i’m lucky maybe I can rebuild the clutch.

I’m building Crusty the trusty F150. My DD is 21 years old. It needs a power boost.
Aftermarket heads. $750
Aftermarket Cam. $250
Aftermarket intake. $Gaa! Maybe $500
Ancillary items $800
I’ll only be in the 400hp range at that point but I’ll have some fun doing it.

I’ve already lowered my car so I’d add sway bars, an intake, remove the turbo muffler and add axle back exhaust because the car is too damn quiet, wheels with a bit more offset and grippier tires, upgrade to GTI brakes and a tune before calling it a day because there’s only so much you can sensibly want to do to a Golf.
e30 gets a similar treatment. It’ll be lowered ~1.5" on H&R Spring/Koni yellows. Need swaybars, sport interior, e28 mtech spoiler, full exhaust and Enkei 92s to get it to where I’d like the car to be. Before those things happen though I need to remedy some rust and in doing so I’ve discovered that I dislike doing bodywork.
BmanUltima's car still hasn't been fixed yet, he'll get on it tomorrow, honest.

Since I drove my Lincoln and IS pretty regularly I am going to choose the Lincoln.
Supercharged Coyote with a super mean cam (500hp would be plenty).
Stock exhaust (quiet 90% of the time) with electric cutouts (loud when I want) right after the headers.
Some sort of factory appearing middle console with cup holders and storage. Ipod hook up through a factory looking head unit that won’t necessitate cutting up the dash.
20 inch 100 spoke dayton’s.
Firm up the suspension a bit. It can be scary at times.

3L v8? I have an e30 I was going to do an engine swap on (theoretically at least. Now I am going to theoretically turbo it). I was looking at the little v8 and thought that would be a unique swap, then I realized there really are not a lot of people making power with it. That sounds sweet though

I’ve already swapped the engine in my 2001 Prelude to what I wanted (H23A) and a few other bits are already on it, but I’d swap the transmission to a T2W4 (factory Torsen LSD, more aggressive gear ratios), do the NSX front brake conversion, put on the Mugen suspension kit, and put a set of mag blue Volk CE28N’s on it.

I really want to do an 2.0 turbo motor swap into my 2.5 NA Forester when the warranty is up to make a sleeper. It’s going to need at least sway bar upgrades to deal with that and maybe wider tires. Realistically, that’ll probably never happen because I don’t have time to do an engine swap on by myself on my DD. So probably just some larger diameter gold rims because Subaru, lowering springs, an aftermarket exhaust, some Perrin parts the take the slop of out the stock shifter linkage, and possibly rally lights.

2002 540iT. All of this is stuff I will reasonably get to in the next year or two.
- upgrade stereo because the stock one is awful. Hardest part is going to be finding a working oem sirius module. I already have all the amps & speakers, just need to figure out how I want to handle a sub box.
- Supercharger kit. Not 100% which one, probably VF engineering because dinan is too damn expensive
- Sweet sounding exhaust
- Swap black interior for tan or something more interesting (easier than it sounds, the bmw dudes all want black so a trade should be easy to get)
- Run the auto tranny into the ground so I can do a manual swap
- Upgrade suspension a bit. Just more sporty, I do not want to lower it or anything
I’d like to do an m5 motor swap but I feel like that is too much a pipe dream. 450hp 6sp wagon should be sufficient =)

So we are building out our current DDs? Ok - 09 Mazda 3, 5dr 2.3 MZR. Add - lighter wheels, carbon hood, catback exhaust and intake, but that’s about it. I’d prefer the 6spd out of the 2010 but that’d be a pain to swap out. Add lightness. It really is a super fun car as is - stock it will fly into a tight corner at twice posted and just hunker down and stick.

The later E34's are really great. They look old enough to be classic, but they’re new enough that you don’t have to deal with the stuff that comes along with having a ‘classic’. They’re also a bit more comfortable, since it’s meant to be a mid-level executive car and not a sporty car. But it’s still a sporty car, too.
I’ll trade you straight up for your E39 :), because I really like those too. I saw yours is a wagon though, is it a manual too?

My ‘02 Nissan Xterra SE/SC (Which I bought to keep stock, so I could work on my 944...) has the following done to it, all by me.
-Supercharger reduction pulley (down to 2.4" from 2.63" - doubled the boost from 5psi to 10psi.)
-Doug Thorley headers
-Magnaflow high-flow in-line catalytics.
-Flowmaster 50 series mufflers.
-The entire exhaust is custom made, with 02 sensors drilled into the appropriate locations.
-Mishimoto oil catch can.
-VG30DET cams from a 1986 300ZX Turbo.
-275/70R17 BF Goodrich Allterrain T/A tires.
-Rugged Ridge manual hub locks.
Next to be added is a metal jerry can holder on the tail gate.
Should have bough a base model Silverado. Then my 944 might actually be done...

Hmmm, at the moment I’m hovering around getting a shell of a Mk2 Triumph 2000 and swapping in the 3.5l Rover V8 and LT77 5-speed I’ve got lying around with added fuel injection and proper CV driveshafts at the back (to sort spline lock).
That changes on a daily basis though. Also on the list is a Rover SD1 with a hopped up V8, a Jaguar XJS with ITBs and a lot of lightweighting (4.0l, not V12), an early Maserati Biturbo with a later 2.8l engine or an Alfetta saloon with a 3.0l Arese V6.
If we go for what I've actually got though, it'll either be a 3.0l swap and bigger brakes for my Alfa 156 or lowering springs and 16" wheels for my Jag XJ40. That's more likely....

2010 Colorado V8 and there’s nothing theoretical about these. They are very much on the to-do list. (Of course pending a test of the new Colorado to see if I’d rather change up instead of building up.)
- Add rear sway bar (Complete)
- Performance muffler (Complete, but this one is cheating by your rules as I didn’t do it myself)
- Cold air intake/K&N or similar combination
- Smoke all chrome fittings (May cheat if I can’t find a good way to do it myself)
- Caltrac traction bars
- Corvette (or better) servos
- Ported throttle body
- ECU/trans tune (cheating)
- If the G80 shits the bed (as apparently they like to) that’s going to get an upgrade. Not sure what to, but it won’t be another G80.

i like these real topics. already did the driver. its an 81 silverado cab on a k5 frame. it has a near stock 350 with truck heads, a smallish cam, performer intake, holley 650 carb, headers, 3 inch dual exhaust, rebuilt turbo 350, np203 transfer case(fulltime 4x4), 3.73 gears. wide street tires, on rally wheels. for the driving I do, it handles like its on rails. according to my numbers to date, i have around $4200 (real deal) money into it. been driving it daily a 60 mile round trip for 3 1/2 years now. so right now its just about paying itself off investment wise.

The install can look very OEM, it's a small module that's easy to hide, and it's cord is like 20 ft long, so you can put it almost anywhere. For convince, mine is under the drivers seat

The technical limit is the inverters max output. As far as I know none of the aftermarket tuners have figured out how to reprogram the drive inverter’s controllers, if it’s even possible.

I meant oem look as in keeping the factory radio. Part of the reason I bought an e39 was no idrive, the radio is perfect for me, just high tech enough.

Mainly because I’d like to be able to keep outside ventilation in the rain, rather than be forced to turn on the a/c when around town (fan without a/c works, but I like outside air). Also, it would be nice to be able to keep the windows cracked open in hot weather and not need to worry about rain.
